He says:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIf you\u2019re hoping to get photos of animals, you have to know them, know their habitats, and know their behaviors so you can set yourself up for the best possible position.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Then, you match the time of year and your day to their behavior; follow their prey. Questions to ask include: When and where do they have young? Are there researchers or guides tracking the wildlife you\u2019re hoping to photograph?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Understanding animal behavior is crucial for wildlife photography. You\u2019ll have limited variables to adjust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Other times, you\u2019ll have the opportunity to play with what and how much is in focus. The question to ask then is: <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What story do you want to tell? Stretch your thinking on how you\u2019re using that tool.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Manipulating the depth of field allows for creative expression and focus on your subject.<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Shallow depth of field emphasizes a singular subject, blurring out distractions, as seen in a macro shot of a leaf where the camera focuses solely on the leaf\u2019s texture. Alternatively, a deeper depth of field keeps an entire landscape in focus. Knowing when to employ each method can transform your photography.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">How near or far you are to your subject also shapes this decision. With regard to his tripod, he says:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI often leave it behind; the moment can be so fast, the tripod\u2019s just in the way. Using the landscape\u2014a rock, tree, or laying on the ground\u2014can be helpful.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When are tripods really useful, and when are they too heavy or cumbersome to carry in the backcountry? When can you get away without one? Here\u2019s how Reinertsen explains:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tripods stabilize shots in low light or long exposures, but they can be cumbersome in fast-moving situations.<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> In most wildlife scenarios, a tripod can be a hindrance. Instead, <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">he uses natural props, like leaning against a tree or lying down, to steady the camera. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cSometimes you have to grab your camera really quickly and lay down\u2014there\u2019s no time for a tripod\u2014even if it\u2019s with you. For Reinertsen, ease of movement is a priority. He says:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI get burned out if I\u2019m carrying everything all the time, so I plan my shots. Am I looking for large mammals moving across the landscape (300 mm) or small inquisitive birds who\u2019ll come nearby if I have a couple of cranberries or peanuts (24 \u2013 70 <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">mm<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">)?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Charlie\u2019s tip for deciding what camera gear to bring on your next trip is: Choose what you want to focus on. Decide your goal for the day or trip. Then cater your gear to your trip goals and shot list. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cMy biggest advice for traveling is to plan to stitch images together in post-production to create a panoramic landscape image with a 50 <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">mm<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">So, when faced with the question of what to bring, the question really is how to maximize the benefit of the gear you choose to bring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Packing a lighter helps you remain nimble in the field while still being prepared to capture compelling images. Don\u2019t Get Stuck on Your Usual (or even Favorite) Camera Settings\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">How do you break out of your habitual camera settings? <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Don\u2019t get stuck in a rut. Try to maintain playfulness with your settings. <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Reinertsen confessed:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For the vast majority of my work, I:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Set the camera to aperture priority<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Make sure the shutter isn\u2019t too slow<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Protect the highlights (drop exposure down a couple of settings)<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Go into manual mode if needed.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The trouble with relying on the same settings or starting point is: you can get the same types of images over and over again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Charlie\u2019s advice? <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Challenge yourself to do things completely differently\u2014even break the rules.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_271745\" style=\"width: 1930px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-271745\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-271745 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/ibslhk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/NAT-HAB-jim-beissel_277426.jpg\" alt=\"WWF traveler photographs camera nature Nat Hab adventure\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1200\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-271745\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 Nat Hab Expedition Leader Jim Beissel<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Use telephoto with wide open aperture and fast shutter speed for mountainous landscapes, for example, or something quite different from what you would normally do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Switching up your aperture, ISO, or focal length challenges you to see and capture scenes differently, pushing your photography into new territory. Experimentation can unlock more creative shots. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Charlie\u2019s tip: <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Play with settings and composition no matter how long you\u2019ve been photographing nature and wildlife.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">6.\u00a0Share the Whole Story, Not Just the Hero Shot<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The important point in Tip #6 is to tell the whole story. <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sometimes luck and time in the field lead to the perfect shot, but there are a lot of other shots to get to tell the whole story of that particular locale.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.org.uk\/updates\/top-ten-outdoor-photography-tips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Wildlife photography<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> isn\u2019t just about getting the perfect close-up. <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Capturing the broader ecosystem\u2014like landscape shots, habitat details, or animal behaviors\u2014helps tell the complete story of an animal in a place. <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Instead of solely pursuing one &#8220;hero&#8221; shot, work toward telling a visual story that encapsulates the environment, behavior, and life of your subject.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tip: Ask yourself &#8212; what\u2019s unexpected about this outing? <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Follow your curiosity; sometimes, it might lead you in an unplanned direction.
